A brief history of art Cave paintings. Clay then bronze statues. Then for about 1, 400 years, people painted nothing except bold but rudimentary pictures of either the Virgin Mary and Child or the Crucifixion. Some bright spark realised that things in the distance looked smaller and the pictures of the Virgin Mary and the Crucifixion improved hugely. Suddenly everyone was good at hands and facial expression and now the statues were in marble. Fat cherubs started appearing, while elsewhere there was a craze for domestic interiors and women standing by windows doing needlework. Dead pheasants and bunches of grapes and lots of detail. Cherubs disappeared and instead there were fanciful, idealised landscapes, then portraits of aristocrats on horseback, then huge canvasses of battles and shipwrecks. Then it was back to women lying on sofas or getting out of the bath, murkier this time, less detailed then a great many wine bottles and apples, then ballet dancers. Paintings developed a certain splodginess - critical term - so that they barely resembled what they were meant to be. Someone signed a urinal, and it all went mad. Neat squares of primary colour were followed by great blocks of emulsion, then soup cans, then someone picked up a video camera, someone else poured concrete, and the whole thing became hopelessly fractured into a kind of confusing, anything-goes free for all. About This Quote

While the history of art is a very lengthy one, some artists have had more impact on the world than others. One of the greatest examples is Michelangelo. Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Italy. He was an Italian painter, sculptor, architect and poet. He was considered the first true modern artist because he changed the way people viewed art.

Michelangelo was not only a great artist, but also a great thinker. He helped to change the way people viewed art by using emotion rather than technical skill to create works of art. He had a great influence on artists all over the world. Michelangelo is also known for creating some of the most famous paintings in the world including The Last Judgment, The Creation of Adam, The Creation of Eve and many more. Another person that would have a great impact on the world would be Pablo Picasso.

Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Malaga, Spain. His father Miguel Angel Ruiz y Picasso was a painter of minor importance while his mother Josefa Ramona Picasso was an aristocrat of great importance to him as he would later marry her daughter Olalla. Picasso's father died when he was four years old which led him being raised by his mother and her family until he was eighteen years old when he moved back with his mother and sister into France where they both lived until his mother's death in 1904. Picasso decided to become an artist after reading some books about how to paint better and especially about cubism which is a style of painting that begins with breaking down objects into their basic geometric forms (called lines) before reassembling them into new shapes (called points).

One important question that Picasso wanted to answer is why we see things as they are instead of what they actually look like. He believed that this idea led him to make work based on his subjective interpretation. His ideas influenced many artists since then including Andy Warhol who created works that were based off of Picasso's paintings such as Marilyn Monroe's dress hanging up above Warhol's head which shows Warhol's interpretation of what Marilyn Monroe looked like wearing that dress although Warhol said it just looked like any old dress hanging up there so there might not be much influence there at all but you never know maybe? Another person that influenced many artists would be Salvador Dali who created surrealistic paintings throughout his career which shows how Dali thought about life and what
